EMPIRE OF SHADOWS is somewhat of an alternative reality. This series on Kyoto is my take on framing the city differently, a city that is imbued with magic realism. It seemed to exist outside of the normal now- well at least outside my European normality. So I played with reality by trying to trick myself into seeing little wonders at every street corner. Things don’t have to be the way they are, don’t always have to be the way they are seen. I wanted to step into a world where mystery and beauty lurked side by side in the shade.

As you might know Kyoto has gained international fame over centuries for its traditional arts and crafts, such as ceramic work. Alongside my photography, I decided to experiment with ceramics transferring pixels onto clay. There will be a bespoke collection of my prints transferred onto porcelain vessels hand-made by ISABELLE POUPINEL.

EMPIRE OF SHADOWS - a limited collection of photography shot in Kyoto hand-printed on 8 porcelain platters.
